CANTARINI (Heb. מִן הַחַזָּנִים), Italian family, descended from Marco (Mordecai) Cohen, one of the victims of the massacre at Asolo in 1547. The family acquired the additional name Cantarini because one of its members was cantor ("cantarín") of the synagogue. Noteworthy were: ANGELO DI GRASSIN (b. 1694), physician who drafted the statutes of the celebrated Padua relief association Sovvegno (1713), and published a treatise on practical surgery (1715), dedicated to the naturalist Antonio Vallisnieri. ḤAYYIM MOSES (1660–1731), rabbi, physician, and poet in Padua and Rovigo. LEONE DI SIMONE (1592–1651), rabbi and physician in Venice and Padua; he wrote sermons, a commentary on the Book of Joshua, treatises on biblical subjects, and medical miscellanies. (Attilio Milano)
